autism spectrum disorder diagnostic assessment

Autism is a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others, and experiences their environment. Autism impacts an individual’s communication and social abilities and presents with repetitive and restrictive behaviours and interests.

Although an Autism assessment can be challenging, it has been shown that when a child receives early assessment, they are more likely to demonstrate improved cognitive, developmental, and adaptive functioning and enhanced language and social skills compared to children who are assessed and diagnosed later. Once diagnosed, the young person, their parents and professionals can understand the young person better and tailor strategies specifically for their needs. Without diagnosis many areas of life can be difficult, distressing and bewildering for the undiagnosed person and can lead to additional stress and mental health challenges.

Arriving at the right diagnosis requires gathering and interpreting a lot of information about the child and involves an interview with parents, appointments with the child to complete an interactive play based assessment (ADOS), contact with any other professionals involved with the child and feedback sessions with the parents to discuss the results and a formal report provided.
Post diagnosis we are able to provide advice, assistance and support for your child’s needs moving forward.
